City States

An RTS-lite strategy game where you build your army and seize territory to defeat the enemy. Inspired by early Napoleonic warfare, choose a Great Power sponsor for your new city and take control of the valley using pikes, muskets and cavalry.

Choose a Sponsor

Pick from six different factions to sponsor your city, each with their own unique bonuses to help you flourish. Embrace different playstyles to counter, out-tech and out produce the enemy.

Build Your City

Carefully balance your economy and military to take advantage of the situation. Watch your city grow as you build houses, barracks and farms to fuel your fight. With an easy-to-learn but reactive economy system, enjoy making strategic building choices between war and prosperity, with a lot of opportunities to experiment with different strategies. 

Fight Your Enemies

Invest in upgrades and research new unit types to surprise and counter your enemy. Form a phalanx of pikes against a cavalry charge or rely on overpowering musket fire to hold the line. Experiment with a variety of army compositions and tech paths, or embrace your inner revolutionary and bring forth a mighty army of peasants to crush your foe.

Face a Challenging Foe

With six enemy factions to fight, each with their own build paths and strategy, and several difficulty levels to overcome, enjoy every skirmish as you plot to overcome your foe. The enemy will dynamically react to the current situation of the battlefield and be ready to face your impending assault, or take advantage of your exposed territory and strike early. No matter your skill there is a challenge to be had here.

This is a very old game of mine I first made in high school. Despite the graphics, some duplicated sprites and potentially dubious late-game performance, this is still one of my favourite creations and making a new and improved remake is always on my mind.

Genuinely though this game is challenging on the harder difficulties. Let me know if you can beat Very Hard against the Revolutionaries faction (extra points if you do it with a non-Revolutionaries faction yourself - it is possible).
